The ...Alan's comment is not entirely accurate. The submarine telegraph manufacturing divisions of the Telegraph Construction & Maintenance Co (Telcon) and Siemens Brothers, with its factory at Warspite Road, in Woolwich merged in 1935 to form a joint venture company Submarine Cables Ltd (SCL) based on the Enderby Wharf site. SCL was acquired by STC in 1970, STC closed its North Woolwich Factory and moved to Enderby Wharf, it also Closed SCL's Erith Factory. Cable manufacture continued on the Enderby Wharf site until 1975 when all cable manufacture was moved to STC's Southampton factory. STC was then owned by ITT but in 1982 it became a UK public limited company and STC Submarine Systems was et up as a separate business unit. It was sold to Northern Telecom (Nortel) in 1991. STC Submarine Systems was acquired by Alcatel in 1996 and became Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN). It retained the name ASN after the merger with Lucent and was acquired by Nokia in 2015.Stewart Ashnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8710611656756005747.post-51682804042153411992011-09-04T18:06:12.521+01:002011-09-04T18:06:12.521+01:00Pedantic point: the telecommunications works is ow...Pedantic point: the telecommunications works is owned by Alcatel-Lucent, not Alcatel.

Alcatel-Lucent, based in Paris, is one of the three or four biggest makers of telecoms equipment in the world. It, like most telecoms equipment companies, is the result of a series of mergers.

Standard Telecommunications & Cables, once the UK arm of a US company, ITT, owned the Greenwich operation for many years until the company collapsed in 1991 and was taken over by Nortel, a Canadian company.

Alcatel bought the business from Nortel in 1993, and Alcatel, a French company, merged with Lucent, a US company, in 2006.Alan Burkitt-Grayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17344807923068268667noreply@blogger.com
